I hosted a party recently that included people from many phases of my life. The party lasted several hours and over the course of it, dozens of people moved through the house. Some I’d known since childhood, some from decades of work, others were a part of my family. My greatest joy was watching them discover one another. I would catch bits of conversation, detailing the ways in which we were all connected. Some of them knew each other, many did not. Some had connections between them that had nothing to do with me. Hearing them tell their stories was an amazing gift. At times I caught myself laughing, feeling a bit like I was at my own memorial. It was a magical, dream-come-true kind of day, one I hope to repeat as often as possible.
The people in my life are my most treasured possessions. I have spent all of my years amassing the perfect collection. Each one is beautiful, valuable and irreplaceable. And, like precious gems, there is always room for more.
